James Arthur "Boo" Hanks is an acoustic blues guitarist with roots in the Piedmont string band and blues traditions that began 75 years ago. He saved money for his first guitar by selling packets of garden seeds, picking out the same old-time songs he heard his father playing after long days in the tobacco field. As a young man in the 1940s, Hanks earned pocket change playing guitar at barn dances with his cousins accompanying him on mandolin and spoons. His rich musical repertoire reflects his multi-ethnic heritage (his ancestors were white, African American, Ocinneechee Indian, and family folklore relates that they are descendants of Abraham Lincoln's mother, Mary Hanks.) Today, Hanks lives in Virgilina, Virginia, just over the North Carolina border a stone throw from the rolling hills where he was born. Drawing from the deep musical well of his region, Hanks showcases his virtuosity in the driving time and delicate finger-style guitar of the classic Piedmont Blues made famous by Blind Boy Fuller.

The band’s fusion of traditional bluegrass, folk rock, Afro-Cuban jazz, Celtic, gospel and soul makes their music accessible and yet hard to pigeonhole, giving them creative freedom to explore the full range of roots music from around the globe. The band has been a favorite at MerleFests past, and their unique sound also earned them a Grammy Award nomination in 2006 for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo, one Juno Award, and an Americana Music Association nomination for Best Emerging Artists. This show will be a reunion of four of the original Duhks: Leonard Podolak (banjo/vocals), Jordan McConnell (guitar), Scott Senior (percussion), and Tania Elizabeth (fiddle/vocals). Asheville's own Kellin Watson will be the guest vocalist.

-
- The contest recognizes winners in four categories—country, bluegrass, gospel/inspirational and general. To be eligible to enter, a songwriter must not derive more than 50 percent of his or her total income from songwriting or music publishing.
Submitted songs are judged by a volunteer panel of Nashville songwriters, publishers and other music industry professionals. Judging is based on a song’s originality, lyrics, melody and overall commercial potential. Twelve finalists, three from each category, will be announced during the first week of April 2012. Each of the 12 finalists will enjoy admission and lodging for three nights at MerleFest, will receive a mentoring session with Jim Lauderdale, and will compete on the Austin Stage at MerleFest 25. In addition, the first place winners will receive a performance slot on the Cabin Stage on Friday of the festival.
